April Meetup, 2026

Our third meetup of the year was on the 4th of April 2026 at Marble Arch Hotel. I cannot help but look back to the previous two meetups and feel a tad excited about the growth of the community. People streamed in as early as 2:30pm and we recorded a new high of 62 people. This is worth celebrating as at the beginning we only had 5.5 people show up and 15 attendees on the second meetup of the year.

The energy in the room was amazing. The meetup was led by the amazing Faith Uniter and Cornelius Emase. We had four eager speakers ready to present on a variety of topics. However, as a community that values full engagement and meaningful participation, we had two of them take the stage. Hopefully the other two will take to the stage during the next meetup.

Bash Scripting and Architecture of DBMS(Postgres)

Representing the diverse interests that spark curiosity and joy within the group, Steve Nyasimi a final year student at Mount Kenya University and Derrick Munyiri a PostGreSQL enthusiast delivered engaging and insightful sessions. A first for the both of them, and a milestone for the community whose vision is to give contributors a stage to showcase their open-source contributions and new discoveries.

Steve demonstrated how simple command-line scripts can automate everyday tasks. He walked the audience through the basics of writing a script, including using variables, handling user input and running conditional statements. By showcasing a few practical examples, Steve illustrated how Bash scripting can save time and improve efficiency, especially for repetitive system tasks. The session was engaging and informative, giving attendees a clear introduction to the power and usefulness of shell scripting. As Jono Bacon loves to say, "Community is not just about what you create, but what you enable others to create". In light of that you can learn more about Bash Scripting from what Steve has shared on his blogpost.

Derrick on the other hand explored PostgreSQL as more than just a database but a powerful, extensible system for building reliable applications. He highlighted how its rich feature set, from advanced querying to scalability, makes it a strong choice for developers who want both flexibility and performance. Rather than treating it as a black box, the talk encouraged understanding how PostgreSQL works under the hood, showing that deeper knowledge of your tools can significantly improve how you design, debug and scale real-world projects.

Another exciting milestone for us was having the talks recorded, for posterity and showing new speakers what visibility could do for them. This is a big step forward in capturing our journey, preserving key moments, and sharing the experience with those who couldn’t make it.

After unsuccessful attempts to recover our previous pages, we made the bold decision to start a new YouTube channel. Rather than blurb about the speakers I would love for you to get hear it from the horses own mouth right over at the YouTube channel

Or better yet, check out their videos below!

And now, in true influencer fashion don’t forget to watch, subscribe and drop a comment! Let’s keep growing this amazing community together.

Networking over a Cuppa

In true Kenyan nature, we had chai and mandazi for the networking session. People mingled and the excited little me went around collecting insights on the meetup and the future of the community. All I can say is grab onto your seats for we have a great load ahead for folks.

To commemorate the meetup, we took a group photo. And I cannot help but wonder how amazing this great community will be.
